Assignment 4: Papercraft Research
Introduction
The basis for this project is papercraft. Papercraft is a very amazing practice in which 3D models are made of paper. It resembles engineering and artistic fusion. You can create incredibly complex models of a wide range of objects, including animals, buildings, and even video game or movie characters, by cutting, folding, and adhering sheets of paper together. You only need paper and your imagination to bring your favourite patterns to life in this imaginative and enjoyable craft! I am going to select a renowned paper engineer and assess their work for this assignment.
Matthew Shlian
Matthew Shlian is an amazing paper engineer. His geometric and detailed paper sculptures are well-known. Matthew creates these amazing pieces by combining his experience in design and printmaking. In addition to working with other artists and even corporations like Apple, his work has been shown all around the world. Observing how he turns flat sheets of paper into these elaborate three-dimensional creations is quite intriguing. “Shlian was the first artist awarded the Frederick Hammersley Artist Residency for 2017-2018. Matthew Shlian made a series of paper sculptures called Unholy 48 in 2016. The intricate folding and interconnecting geometric shapes that make up each sculpture in the series combine to form a greater composition. Although "Unholy 48" sounds enigmatic, it is just the name Matthew gave the show.
I understand that Matthew investigates the nexus between art and mathematics in Unholy 48. He creates these aesthetically arresting sculptures by using precise folding techniques with geometric patterns. Even though the sculptures are created completely of paper, they yet have a sense of depth and dimension. Seeing how he manipulates light and shadow to improve the artwork's overall impact is quite intriguing. Given the circumstances, Matthew Shlian's Unholy 48 series demonstrates his exceptional skill as a paper engineer and his capacity to elevate a basic medium like paper to very extraordinary heights.
Why Matthew Shlian/Unholy 48?
I am inspired by Matthew Shlian's Unholy 48 series in a couple of diverse ways. Firstly, I am in awe of how detailed and complex his paper sculptures in Unholy 48 are. It is astounding how he blends mathematics and art to produce these exquisite geometric shapes. It encourages me to stretch the bounds of my own creativity and investigate novel avenues for artistic expression.
Second, it is incredibly motivating to see Matthew's commitment to his craft and his ability to create beautiful works of art out of seemingly simple materials like paper. The outcome reflects his meticulous attention to detail and the amount of work he puts into each piece. It serves as a reminder to me of the value of perseverance, dedication, and hard work when pursuing my own artistic goals. Given the circumstances, I am inspired to think creatively outside the box, accept complexity, and aim for perfection by Matthew Shlian and his Unholy 48 series.
